Succession debate not for discussion at NEC meeting: Fikile Mbalula

With the ANC having lost its majority for the first time since 1994 in the 2024 elections, the party has vowed to suppress any succession debate. It says already there are some members who are talking about the 2027 ANC elective conference.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the party’s six-day NEC meeting and its NEC Lekgotla, ANC Secretary- General Fikile Mbalula says for now they should focus on revival of the ANC as opposed to jostling for positions. He says anyone venturing into the succession debate will be severely dealt with.

“We are saying we must not be diverted and that we are coming from a terrible, horrible and disastrous election campaign that gave us 40 percent and the first thing that we think about is who becomes the leader after President [Cyril] Ramaphosa it can’t be. That discussion we are going to suppress and to the moon and back till it happens at the right time not that it should not happen, we are not going to entertain it.

We know that there are people who are whispering and we find them we are going to suppress it. You would have seen suppression in your life in the ANC you will see it. The ANC is one foot in and one foot out, our pre-occupation cannot be who is becomes the next leader.
