Students’ lives at risk in kasi school

PARENTS fear for their children’s safety and are afraid of sending them to school.

This is because classrooms at Kgwatlhele Primary School in Malepetleke Village, outside Mokopane in Limpopo, are badly cracked and can collapse at any time.

The worried parents have now laid a complaint with the employment and labour department.

A parent told Daily Sun: “Every time my child goes to school, I worry that I might receive a call notifying me that my kid has been injured.”

An inspection was recently conducted and two blocks at the school were closed while one was found not to be compliant with the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

It was also found that the administration block had visible cracks from the foundation to the roof.

Acting provincial chief inspector Reckson Tshishivheli said: “We are aware of the impact that the closure may have on the curriculum.

“However, the specialist closed the buildings in the interests of safeguarding lives.

“We have zero tolerance for non-compliance and will always prioritise the health and safety of people in both the public and private sector.”

Education department spokeswoman Tidimalo Chuene said the district director was working with the school to adjust the timetable and seating arrangements to accommodate pupils while maintaining required social distancing.

She said the provincial government was procuring mobile classrooms.
