Student stabbed during live study session on Facebook

A disturbing incident was captured live on Facebook when a 22-year-old Durban University of Technology (DUT) student was assaulted and stabbed allegedly by a fellow student at their residence on the main Steve Biko campus in Durban, last week.

The victim, who was live-streaming a study session from her room, can be heard in a video obtained by The Witness, shouting at her attacker as she attempts to lock the door.

Chaos ensues as the victim struggles to fend off the attacker, screaming for help while other students enquire about the cause of the visible blood.

Following the ordeal, the student revealed in a subsequent video that she had received medical attention and pleaded for prayers, stating her trauma.

I ask myself how I managed to fight her off while she was on top of me. I am putting everything in the hands of the police, and I hope that justice will be served.

“Emotionally, I am not okay. Whenever I close my eyes, I see her closing the door.

I am even scared to go to campus alone or sleep alone now,” the victim added, visibly shaken by the recent events.

Student representative council (SRC) president at Steve Biko Campus, Solomzi Zoleka said that the student body was investigating the matter.

“We have a team that is on the ground gathering information and we shall have it by Monday.”

They are both students and we need to know what happened that led to this incident, but that does not mean that we condone what happened. We want to get to bottom of everything.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed that the police in Berea have opened a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

“It is alleged that the suspect pushed [open] the door of the victim’s room on Steve Biko Road and assaulted her with a sharp wooden object.

“The motive of the assault is suspected to be related to an ongoing altercation between the two, which resulted in the suspect’s removal from the room. Investigations are ongoing,” he explained.
