The Stellenbosch University Council has called for written submissions to be made on the fate of the Wilgenhof Residence.
The controversial residence came under the spotlight earlier this year after disturbing items related to initiation ceremonies and alleged racism were found in its rooms.
Following an investigation, a three-person tribunal recently compiled a report recommending the residence be shut down.
However, after considering the report the university’s council has decided more discussions are needed.
University council chairperson Nicky Newton-King said the council recognized opinions on the future of Wilgenhof were deeply divided.
Newton-King said the matter involved several issues including the interpretation of tradition.
“These issues must be thoroughly considered in the interest of fairness, transparency, and administrative justice, aligned with SU’s vision and values.”
She said such background led the council to decide the tribunal’s recommendation needs further consideration.
“Therefore, the council is inviting all interested and affected persons and stakeholders to submit written representations on the issues that the closure or non-closure of Wilgenhof would raise and that would need to be considered.”
