The skyrocketing cost of petrol has made people do the unthinkable. This was evident when a petrol station in Southwest Houston, USA, was hit hard at the pump – but not for the reason you might expect.
“The way they did it was very sneaky. They were doing it in front of so many people and different customers,” said owner Jerry Thayil.
He said surveillance video outside the petrol station showed the thieves in action.
A green minivan can be seen in the video Thayil provided to KHOU 11 News.
“They had a trap door in their vehicle, and would put a hose down there and suck it out with the pump,” he said.
He added that the thieves hit his station three times and tried for the fourth.
“Each time, they were there about 15 to 20 minutes … in a high traffic time,” Thayil said.
According to KHOU 11 News, the owner began going through surveillance videos and noticed a pattern.
“I started seeing this van just parked over there,” he said.
He later realized that a black Porsche SUV was there playing lookout. In all, he said the thieves managed to steal over 4 000L of petrol.
“We had locks on our fill caps. Still, they were coming in and I think they were locking it with their own locks,” Thayil said.
