The highly-anticipated Commission of inquiry into the capture of South Africa’s state institutions kicks off this morning in Parktown, Johannesburg.

At the centre of the hearings are the fugitive Gupta family, who enjoyed a close relationship with former president Jacob Zuma and his son Duduzane. The Guptas left South Africa as allegations of corruption and stripping of state-owned enterprises (SoEs) of billions of rand through illegal contracts surfaced. The extent of the family’s influence was detailed in leaked emails from Gupta computer servers, dubbed “GuptaLeaks”.

Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo will head the inquiry, which is expected to run for two years.
