Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said that people should check if spaza shops were registered to run their businesses.

She was speaking at a Cabinet post-briefing amid safety concerns sparked by the death of five children who allegedly ate snacks bought from a spaza shop in Naledi, Soweto.

Ntshavheni said that people should keep away from businesses they deemed to be selling unsafe products.

“As South Africans, when we go to spaza shops, we must demand that we see your registration certificate. The Department of Small Business Development continues to work with municipalities to ensure there are inspections of spaza shops.”
