SA urges restraint after Soleimani assassination

Qassim Soleimani

South Africa is walking a diplomatic tightrope in the aftermath of the assassination of Iranian General, Qassim Soleimani. It says it’s concerned about regional and international peace and is calling for restraint on both sides.

Economists are warning escalating tensions could have a devastating impact on oil prices which affects local petrol prices.

Political analyst Siphamandla Zondi said the US’ position in the Middle East has never been one of the negotiations and said the country is looking for “a victory” in an attempt to cement their position as a superpower.

Zondi agreed with the UN recommendations to try to find a political and peaceful solution without using the people of Iran and Iraq as pawns.
