A senior Gauteng health official has been shot dead outside her complex in Mondeor, south of Johannesburg.
Provincial police say that Babita Deokaran dropped off her child at school shortly before the shooting.
She died in hospital on Monday.
They also say the shooting could have been an assassination, but investigations are still ongoing.
According to the Gauteng Department of Health, she was the Chief Director of Financial Accounting and at times acted as the Chief Financial Officer.
Gauteng Health MEC Dr Nomathemba Mokgethi expressed shock saying Deokaran was an invaluable member of the department.
