President Cyril Ramaphosa said the national government would intervene directly when it comes to service delivery projects in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) municipalities.
This includes the building of bridges, access to water, and other public infrastructure.
Ramphosa was speaking at the Presidential Imbizo in Mhlumayo, Ladysmith, on Friday.
He said this was a request made by KZN Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube.
The imbizo was held at the poverty-stricken Uthukela District Municipality facing various challenges – including unemployment.
Back in 2017, there were three projects launched for sanitation and water – but none of these were executed.
Ramaphosa said municipalities need the national government’s help.
“We have seen that in local government, there is lack of capacity – there are fewer engineers and planners. This is why we want national government to support local much more directly.”
Ministers will now directly be working with municipalities to complete projects in this area.
