Police yet to question driver of vehicle that hit scholar transport in Carletonville

Police are yet to question the driver of the vehicle which hit a minibus taxi killing 12 children on the West Rand on Wednesday morning.

On Wednesday, a Ford Ranger rammed into a Toyota Siyaya, causing it to overturn before it eventually caught on fire.

Emergency services arrived on the scene and declared 13 people dead, including the driver of the scholar transport.

Accompanying Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi on a visit to the hospital, police revealed that although the driver of the Ford Ranger in the accident was in hospital, they were still to make contact with him.

Police also committed to expediting the identification process and conducting tests before determining if he could be held responsible.

“As in when the driver is ready to be interviewed, they do the investigations,” said Merafong City Mayor Nozuko Best.

So far preliminary numbers reveal that seven children were admitted, six discharged and another transferred to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

Meanwhile, the driver is at a private hospital.
