Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu has blamed the Western Cape government for long delays in procuring permanent Sassa offices for Khayelitsha.
Zulu explains that Sassa has been using temporary facilities but hopes to secure permanent offices by October.
Last month, thousands of social grant beneficiaries were left in the lurch in Khayelitsha when the provincial social development offices that Sassa also used, were closed for renovations.
“I personally don’t like politicizing service delivery, I think we all need to step up. But in this province, there was a bit of a problem with the agreement even giving this space where we are currently today,” Zulu said.
“Sassa went through difficulty and that is very unnecessary for our people. We need to put the people first, like I say the government in this province has to keep the people and the people of Khayelitsha belong to this province they cannot be treated differently than any other person.”
In a statement, Social Development MEC Sharna Fernandez says Zulu’s claims are disingenuous as several attempts have been made since July to assist Sassa.
The Western Cape Public Works Department has been unavailable for comment.
