103-year-old gogo fights for Sassa grant

A gogo who’s 103 years old from Clau-Clau in KaBokweni, Mpumalanga, has not been receiving her grant money since February.

Esther Nonyane, who is also blind, shared her distress with the publication.

She revealed that her financial difficulties has led her to let go of her helper.

Verification delays

In February, Esther’s nephew Joseph Mabuza approached Sassa offices to inquire about the delay in her social grant payment.

He was informed Esther’s existence was still under verification.

“I’m not dead, I’m still alive and don’t understand the delay in verification. I’ve been unable to afford basic necessities,” a frustrated Esther said.

She said she was unhappy as no one has even tried to find out how she survived.

Gogo said this was her first time to encounter problems with her grant money.

Family’s support

Joseph mentioned that they have complied with all of Sassa’s requirements, yet the issue remains unresolved.

To support his gogo, Joseph has had to put aside a portion of his small salary to help her buy basic needs.

“The prolonged process is frustrating. We’ve been sent from pillar to post without any clear communication,” Joseph said.

Sassa’s response

Sassa provincial spokesman Senzeni Ngubane said they’d need to escalate Esther’s issue further to head office.

“We need to determine the cause of the blocked card by liaising with our head office,” he said.
