SANDF Soldier Drowns After Vehicle Swept Away by Polokwane Floods

A 36-year-old member of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has tragically died after being swept away by powerful floodwaters in Polokwane, Limpopo.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning, 1 January, when the woman was travelling in a Renault Triber with two other occupants. According to police, the vehicle was caught in fast-flowing water beneath a bridge on Grobler Street after heavy rainfall in the area.

The soldier was swept away by the raging waters and did not survive. Police divers were later deployed and recovered her body approximately 2.5 kilometres from where the vehicle became trapped.

The exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation.

Following the tragedy, Limpopo Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe has once again urged residents to exercise extreme caution during the rainy season.

“Overflowing rivers and streams are extremely dangerous. Communities are urged to avoid crossing flooded roads and bridges, as conditions can change rapidly and become life-threatening,” she said.

Authorities continue to warn that heavy rains significantly increase the risk of flash floods, particularly in low-lying areas, and have called on motorists and pedestrians to prioritise safety at all times.
