Cape Town firefighters: 2021 salaries docked for 2019 strike

Firefighters in Cape Town say their greatest battles are not with infernos but with management.

Workers say they have had their salaries docked recently without warning.

The pay cuts were apparently because of their absence from work during an illegal strike in 2019.

The matter is now at the CCMA as the SA Municipal Workers Union argues that the City has not upheld an agreement.

Firefighters and their employer agreed on a plea bargain in June this year where workers would make up the hours they owed the City for the 2019 strike.

Meanwhile, the City of Cape Town’s Chief Fire Officer Ian Schnetler has refuted the firefighters’ claims.

He has told eNCA that no salary cuts are taking place and that the only deductions being made are because of the non-attendance of staff.

And that workers had been advised that this would be done.
