A group of 76 students repatriated from China two weeks ago have been reunited with their families. They’ve been in quarantine since returning to South Africa. None of them tested positive for COVID-19. It’s been more than a year of not seeing her loved ones face to face.
The relief is visible on Zaba Mbatha’s face. I have been longing for this day I don’t know from when I have been wanting to get home I am so excited,” Mbatha said. Mbatha left for China in April last year to pursue her studies.
“It was like depressing a lot because we had to stay home and we could not go outside we had to isolate ourselves from the Chinese because we were not supposed to be in a group we had to stay in our dormitories we had to stay there and they would deliver food for us in our rooms,” she said. She endured 51 days in lockdown before returning to South Africa. Mbata and her fellow students have been urged to help spread the message – that adhering to the regulations will help in the fight to flatten the curve.
The students have now been released from quarantine, but they move to a different kind of isolation, as the country remains under lockdown.
