SA musicians pay tribute to legendary Johnny Clegg

Singer Yvonne Chaka Chaka remembers the first time she met Johhny Clegg. She says the country loved him.

“We did a couple of shows. I remember our very first show in Paris in 1987… He was just amazing. It was very funny, none of us could speak French… I travelled to New York with Jesse Clegg, it’s just amazing family. The world loved him, he was just a down-to-earth guy.”

Danny K, who worked with Clegg says, he was more than a musician and was able to unite the country through his music.

“What struck me immediately when meeting Johnny was he was much more than a musician. Music has the ability to unite people. Through his music, he united us where politicians failed. We owe a great deal to him. See us free through music.”

Clegg died at the age of 66 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2015 but continued to tour and perform around the world.
