Background

The Perinatal HIV Research Unit (PHRU) was established in 1996. The Perinatal HIV Research Unit has been involved in research, training, policy formation and advocacy in issues concerning HIV-positive women and their children.

In recent years the work of the unit has expanded beyond the original focus of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, to include treatment trials in adults and children, prevention research, psychosocial research and policy development. In addition the Unit has developed an HIV vaccine clinical trials unit (HVCTU) and started with HIV Vaccine Trials back in 2001.

The unit is recognised nationally and internationally as a leader in the field of research and policy in the area of mother-to-child transmission of HIV. It has also developed a reputation as a leading African research unit for clinical trials in adult and children with HIV, with one of the largest cohorts.

Main purpose of the job

To provide a communication link between participants and staff.
To call participants as per daily schedule
To recruit eligible participants for the study and build trust between the community and the organization.
Location

PHRU Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, Soweto
Key performance areas

Build trust between participants and study team
Recruit eligible participants
Conduct Interviews over the phone and enter reliably on a database.
Build and maintain relationships with the hospital staff
Conduct follow up visits or telephone calls timeously according to schedule for that day
Report to call centre administrator & study coordinator
Conduct HIV behavioural risk discussions with participants & adherence counselling
Perform fieldwork activities as required
Providing other service as requested by management when not engaged in call centre/recruitment
Required minimum education and training

Matric
Basic Counsellor Certificate
Code 10 drivers license with PDP
Computer literacy using MS Word and Excel
Required minimum work experience

1-year counselling experience in a VCT and research field
Desirable additional education, work experience and personal abilities

Ability to speak different local languages including Tswana, Xhosa, Zulu & also Sepedi
Counselling experience
Attention to detail
Empathy and Understanding to patients
