IFP wishes to continue reconciliatory talks with ANC, as per Prince Buthelezi’s wish

Following Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) founder and long-standing president Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi’s passing, his party says it wants to continue with reconciliatory talks with the African National Congress (ANC).
Buthelezi’s successor Velenkosini Hlabisa said the leadership of the IFP wants to fulfil his long-term vision, of seeing the two political parties reaching a consensus on the violence that spilled over South Africa’s townships in the lead-up to its democratic breakthrough.
More than 20,000 people were killed during the 80s and 90s.
While the IFP has largely been blamed for the violence and was found to have been aided by the apartheid government, Buthelezi has never taken responsibility for what he himself termed a low-level civil war.
Buthelezi, who died on Saturday has instead accused the ANC of tarnishing his party’s reputation over the conflict that took place ahead of the democratic dispensation.
The ANC has admitted the 95-year-old’s vision was to find lasting peace between the two parties.
Hlabisa said the IFP leadership will try to fulfill Buthelezi’s wishes.
“It is unfortunate that he closed his eyes with that item not having not been finalized… it was against his great wish that should the time come when God calls him upon he would be happy that the matter would have been resolved. But as the leadership, we will pursue the matter with the ANC top leadership.”
