NPA says it has strong case against rape-accused cop

The case of a Cape Town police constable accused of raping a detainee will return to court on 23 December for a formal bail application.

The 31-year-old constable is facing charges including rape, pointing with a firearm and kidnapping.

The NPA says it believes it has a strong case against the officer.

WC National Prosecuting Authority’s Eric Ntabazalila said: “His case has been postponed to 23 December for bail application, this follows an incident that happened over the weekend where the court was told this morning that he was part of the group of police officers who took in a suspected shoplifter in Nyanga.

“But after delivering his colleagues at different places, he took the suspected shoplifter to a place next to the airport to the bushes there where he s.e.xually assaulted him pointing a firearm at him.”

Meanwhile, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate says it has also offered counselling to the victim.

Ipid spokesperson Grace Langa said: “The victim was offered with counseling but then he was not ready at the time and we then gave him the contact details of the person appointed to offer those services to him. We advised that he contact that person only when he is ready.”
