R1.4bn allocated to repair Cape Town’s central line

The transport department is making R1.4-billion available to repair Cape Town’s central line. The plan is to fix train routes going to Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain. Minister of Transport Fikile Mbalula after questions were raised about whether train services in Cape Town would be resurrected by Prasa.

“There are people who are working here in Prasa for many years who are questioning my decision,” Mbalula said. And they have been here they look like furniture if they are so good why was Prasa run down on their watch.  Prasa is on a mission to restore the central line. The recent train arson attacks have seen operations on this route being dysfunctional.

Mbalula says the R1.4-billion repair plan will be launched in phases to get mainly Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain commuters back on track but the issue of residents occupying land next to railway lines seems problematic. Land invaders say they have nowhere to go.

Almost half of Cape Town’s train commuters travel on the Central Line which hasn’t been operational since late last year. Repairs are estimated to be completed by April 2021.
