Public warned against making hoax emergency calls

The Western Cape Emergency Medical Services is warning perpetrators to stop making hoax calls.

There have been several reports of EMS personnel getting hijacked and robbed after receiving these calls.

The provincial Health Department also says these hoax calls are dangerous for patients in need of real urgent attention.

According to Dr Shaheem de Vries, director of the Western Cape Government Health Emergency Medical Services, about 30 percent of calls, coming through the call centre, do not require patient transport.

“Hoax calls are notorious for health services and approaching Easter weekend this is a particular concern.

“We’re urging our citizens to use our emergency services including ambulance services responsibly.
