Protestors block roads in Imbali

Angry scholar transport drivers have taken to the streets in protest and blocked Willowfontein Road in Imbali Unit 18 with burning tyres and broken bottles on Thursday morning.

The drivers closed off the road since earlier on Thursday morning.

The frustrated drivers told the publication that they wanted police to stop targeting them by impounding their vehicles and fining them.

Those pupils using scholar transport were left stranded on Thursday as the protest continued.

Imbali Unit BB14 and 18 scholar transport chairperson Simon Gogo said the problem started on Monday when traffic officers and Police officers part of Operation Shanela descended on Imbali and began impounding their vehicles.

He said at least eight cars have been impounded while others have been fined and had their license discs taken away.

“They say they want permits, but when we showed them letters proving that they are in a process [of getting permits] they still impounded the cars. We even have stickers that we are paying for but still they are impounding our cars,” he said.

The road was still closed by 9.30am on Thursday and law enforcement was not present to control the scene.
