The kind of work you will be part of

Siyavula is embarking on a project to roll out Mathematics and Sciences e-learning services to a selection of schools in Gauteng Province in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE). The project will run over 3 years and involves us validating a teacher- and advisor-led implementation model of edtech in no- and low-fee public schools. We plan to take our existing model, which is currently being successfully used in private schools in South Africa, and tailor it to teachers in low- and no fee- public schools. Our aim is to not only improve school performance but also provide sufficient data to enable provincial management for tracking curriculum implementation.

What we are looking for

We are looking for a senior project manager to lead this project. Like the rest of the team, the project manager will have a solid understanding of and empathy for South Africa’s rich cultural diversity. The successful candidate will have a hands-on approach to execution and implementation of initiatives and proven success in relationship building with external parties. The ability to communicate openly and effectively with internal and external stakeholders will be pivotal in making this project a success.

The project manager will be responsible for managing resources, schedules, financials and adhering to project milestones and deliverables throughout the full project lifecycle. This also includes management of issues, risks and project change requests to ensure successful and on-time milestone delivery. They will be expected to contribute to process improvement initiatives as it relates to improving project delivery and feedback on insights gained from being on the ground.

The project manager will the authority to run the project on a day-to-day basis, verify that the project produces the required deliverables of quality, within the specified constraints of time and cost and to achieve the potential benefits defined in the project scope.

Key areas of responsibility include

Deployment
Deploy our tailored e-learning solution to high schools in Gauteng within project scope and requirements.

Establish baseline for registration and engagement within scope requirements.

Drive engagement with data
Drive engagement with our data among subject advisors and district managers through monthly community of practice sessions.

Train and support a group of subject advisors and district managers to engage with the data collected over the schools in the project.

Establish and co-facilitate regular face-to-face support meetings through community of practice sessions.

Establish a baseline for measuring engagement with the data.

Join and participate in quarterly project team meetings as well as monthly meetings with the core team to provide support.

Provide insights and considerations for the data and analytics teams based on learnings from meetings and on-the-ground support in the classrooms.

Relationships and Communication

Manage a team of 6 trainers who will be based in schools involved in the project.

Directly manage the relationship with district managers, DCESes and senior management teams.

Be the primary point of contact for the execution of the project and its deliverables and to initiate and drive actions which lead to successful interventions.

Build and maintain relationships by engaging relevant leaders and stakeholders to establish credibility, solve problems, build consensus and achieve objectives

Work creatively and analytically in a problem-solving environment demonstrating initiative, innovation and excellence.

Project Management

Manage the day-to-day project activities and resources and initiate and run project meetings where relevant.

Set and continually manage project expectations while delegating and managing deliverables with trainers and stakeholders where appropriate and relevant.

Manage project scope and changes.

Act as an internal quality control check for the project.

Manage ongoing quality control and participate in quality issue resolution.

Support formal/informal schedules to manage engagements (meetings, training sessions etc).

Reporting and Deliverables

Manage all aspects of multiple, related actions to ensure the overall project is aligned to and directly supports the achievement of strategic objectives.

Provide status reporting regarding project milestones, deliverable, dependencies, risks and issues, communicating across leadership.

Establish practices, templates, policies, tools and partnerships to expand and mature capabilities for the organisation.

Review and feedback on current project plans and develop plans for all phases of the project.

Together with the team, procure adequate resources to achieve project objectives in planned time frames within the scope of the requirements.

Experience in successfully leading projects and programs to on-time, on-schedule and within budget close

Strong experience presenting to executive teams and management and demonstrated communication skills; both written and oral with technical and non-technical staff, all levels of management.

Flexible with proven ability to work within an environment with potentially shifting priorities, demands and timelines through analytical and problem-solving capabilities.

Passionate about improving education, both locally and globally, and the use of technology in classrooms.

Embrace transparency and openness as a general operating procedure.

Able to work independently in Gauteng.

Valid driver’s license and own vehicle.

Job Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in appropriate field of study or equivalent work experience.

8+ years of project management experience, including tracking and planning projects.

Intermediate level of proficiency with MS-Office or G-SUITE with experience presenting to stakeholders and / or Senior Leadership.

Proven ability to drive for results and accountability within a project manager or leadership role.

Proven ability to work in an ambiguous environment and collaborate across multiple areas in order to achieve a common objective.

Interpersonal skills to influence and spur change and facilitate and enhance performance.

Demonstrated decisiveness in resolving problems, making decisions and identifying priorities on the ground.

Experience working in the education sector with a focus on Gauteng (advantageous).
