Eskom sees signs of improvement in power generation

Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa says South Africa is keeping an escalation in power cuts at bay.

That’s because Eskom is producing enough energy to accommodate planned maintenance without escalating power cuts.

Ramokgopa said some of the energy action plan interventions are working.

“We’ve been able to maintain if you like that trendline, we are approximately in that 60 percent energy availability factor,” he said.

“As a result of improved generation capacity now we’ve got an additional space to do what we call good maintenance, planned maintenance. Remember that one of the underlying assumptions was when we entered winter as part of our winter outlook.

“We had said that we’re going to reduce planned maintenance drastically so that we have as many units as possible at any given time generating the megawatts that we need.”
