Fannie Masemola says SA needs double its police force

South Africa needs double its police force to be able to deal with crime.

This according to the new national police commissioner, Fannie Masemola.

According to the latest crime stats, both murder and carjackings increased in the last quarter of 2021.

Masemola says about 10,000 new officers are in training and will soon be deployed.

“In an ideal situation, currently we have 182,000 police who include clericals sitting behind a computer. When we talk about real police we have about 150,000,” he said.

“The ideal situation If we double that number to 300,000 we will be able to deal with the crime that is in the country.

“Budget constraints are a reality. We have 10,000 police in colleges and will be going out to be in the streets.”
