Police arrest more than 100 people in Riverlea

Over a hundred people have been arrested in Riverlea as police clamp down on violence and illegal mining.

There had been gun battles between zama zama gangs in the area in the south of Johannesburg.

Police spokesperson Brenda Muridili said police are gathering information.

“These operations are 24/7. At times you’re not going to see the members operating because some of them operate covertly while they are gathering information together with crime intelligence,” she said.

“There will be times when the community will be saying we don’t see the operators but they will be in the area.”
