Paul Mashatile’s VIP Protection case hears of erratic driving

The Randburg Magistrate’s Court has heard how the driver of the victim’s vehicle in the VIP Protection trial, was crossing lanes on the highway before the alleged assault.

Eight members of the Presidential Protection Unit are on trial for allegedly assaulting three people on the N1 Highway last year. Video footage of the incident went viral on social media, causing a huge public outcry over the conduct of the unit.

Today, the defence mainly focused on the injuries sustained by the first witness during an altercation with the former VIP Protection Unit, where the defence alleged that those injuries have been exaggerated.

Defence lawyer Mswazi Makhubele also examined the first witness using images of the victim’s vehicle where he said it had a big crack on the windscreen. However, the state objected saying it’s a big line in the picture.

“What you cannot tell, is with the big crack your worship. I do not think we can say that is a crack. It’s a line in the picture. Your worship I’m entitled to the assumption because this picture has been presented before you. We need to know what it is intended for,” adds Makhubele.

The defence also put it to the witness that he was changing lanes in a manner that the VIP Protection Unit deemed was a threat to the vehicle that was transporting Deputy President Paul Mashatile.

The witness disputed the evidence.

“You went from the extreme left to the extreme right in front of the main car. This is where the commander of the convoy gave instructions that the main car should slow down. I do understand the statement. What I do not understand is you saying the commander. Which one is the commander among the accused? Is it someone who was carrying the principal. The matter will continue on Wednesday.
