Patients held hostage at a local clinic in Daveyton

When patients visited a local physiotherapist in Daveyton on Friday, 28 June at around 1 PM, they expected the consultation to last no more than two hours.

However, the situation escalated unexpectedly. Instead of a brief visit, ten patients and their physiotherapist were held hostage for 6 hours at the Physio 360 clinic.

The ordeal began on Friday afternoon and ended late at night around 6pm.

During the hostage situation, the five suspects allegedly took the patients’ and physiotherapist’s cellphones, cash, and bank cards.

They then proceeded to lock the victims inside the clinic while they allegedly withdrew money from their bank accounts using the stolen cards.

A businessman, who is also a patient, was reportedly robbed of 63,000, and the money was moved using apps.

One of the female patients shared her harrowing experience, stating: “I’m traumatized. It was the scariest experience one had to go through. I lost every cent. I don’t know how I will pay my bills or buy food for my house.”

Another patient recounted: “I got home around 7 pm. They took our cellphones and locked us inside, and there was no way we could get out.”

They managed to escape after breaking the clinic’s door open.

Palesa Xaba, the physiotherapist, expressed her deep distress.

“I give therapy to vulnerable people. The trauma they endured was immeasurable.”

The police were notified, and Sergeant Maxwell Mabunda, spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni District police, confirmed that a case of business robbery had been opened at the Daveyton police station.

Physiotherapists arranged support talks for the patients who were kept captive. The search for the suspects is ongoing.
