South African actress, singer and media personality, Letoya Makhene, has shared a post which gives Mzansi’s social media users a closer look at a relatively private part of her life: her calling as a sangoma.
Letoya rose to fame through recognition for her role in popular South African soapies Isidingo and Generations and took time off in 2003 in order to go to an initiation school for traditional healers. The local soapie star’s recent post depicts her and two fellow traditional healers dressed in sangoma garb, all holding sharp knives
The picture was taken at an Easter-time ritual, where sacrifices for rebirth were made. Letoya shared that one of the women in the picture, Gogo Mulle, went through initiation school with her, a whopping 16 years ago.
The actress went on to reveal some of her personal thoughts on following her calling to be a sangoma. “So for those of you who have been asking when I decided to embark on this journey… The answer is… A long time ago,” Letoya explained
When it comes to talking about her role as a traditional healer, Letoya is somewhat hesitant but explains in her recent post that the position is not something to take lightly.
Thing is when you’ve been on this journey like I have and endured what I have had to endure at initiation school… Then you know to tread carefully when it comes to the responsibilities that come with a gift as great as this.
