The Transport Ministry is ramping up efforts to fill potholes.
Minister Fikile Mbalula on Monday launched Operation Vala Zonke, aimed at fixing municipal and provincial roads.
“Vala Zonke is about a response to the outcry about potholes and giving it a national dimension and taking charge of the problem,” Mbalula said.
“Today [Monday] we launch Vala Zonke throughout SA using the resources that we have. It’s a massive drive, very ambitious and we know that we’re going to succeed.”
Mbalula has blamed corruption and the lack of leadership for the state of South Africa’s roads.
“It’s a lack of leadership, lack of reprioritization if you talk monetary terms and budget allocation and they just put a blind eye to what is a priority,” he said.
“Corruption is everywhere where there’s money. The question is what bulletproof we put in place to act.
“People do all these corrupt activities at the end of the day there’s no consequence.”
