JOHANNESBURG — Controversial media personality Nota Baloyi has once again stirred the pot on social media, this time accusing fellow entertainment figure and broadcaster Sol Phenduka of failing to deliver on a professional agreement. According to Baloyi, the incident dates back to May 2022, when he paid Sol R15,000 to host an event—only to be allegedly snubbed on the day of the gig.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on 22 September, Nota Baloyi vented his frustration over what he describes as being “scammed” by Sol. He claimed that despite receiving full payment upfront, Sol attended the event but outright refused to fulfill his hosting duties.
Nota Baloyi Shares Receipts and Demands Accountability
To support his allegations, Nota posted a screenshot of an FNB payment dated 27 May 2022, showing the R15,000 transaction. In his tweet, he wrote:
“Booked Sol to host a gig & he showed up because I paid the full fee upfront, but flatly refused to do the HOSTING JOB. I took it on the chin, but he never apologised for scamming me. They always act innocent!”
This isn’t the first time Nota Baloyi, known for his outspoken nature and unfiltered commentary, has used social media to call out personalities in the entertainment industry. However, this specific accusation has reignited online debate about professionalism, accountability, and transparency within the local celebrity scene.
While Sol Phenduka has not yet responded publicly to the allegations, many fans and followers are calling for him to issue a statement or explanation. Some social media users have questioned the validity of the claims, while others have taken Baloyi’s side, stating that if the payment was made and the job not completed, then Sol owes both an apology and possibly a refund.
The alleged incident occurred in May 2022, during an event that Baloyi was organising. Details of the event remain vague, but according to Nota, the booking was for Sol to perform as an MC or host for the night.
Although Sol did attend the event in question, Nota Baloyi claims that the broadcaster “flatly refused” to step on stage or take on any of the hosting responsibilities he was paid for. This, he says, left him both professionally embarrassed and financially cheated.
“He never even apologised or acknowledged the mistake. That’s what bothers me the most,” Nota said in a follow-up tweet.
He also suggested that incidents like this are part of a broader pattern of behaviour within the entertainment industry, where celebrities allegedly get away with poor conduct without consequences.
So far, there has been no official response from Sol Phenduka or his representatives. The silence has only fueled speculation and debate among fans and fellow media personalities, with some urging both parties to resolve the matter privately rather than on social platforms.
Others, however, see the issue as a cautionary tale about the importance of contracts, clear deliverables, and accountability—especially when money is involved.
“This is exactly why artists and promoters need contracts that specify every duty, payment structure, and penalty,” one fan tweeted in response to Nota’s post.
Nota Baloyi has long been a polarising figure in South Africa’s media landscape. From his time as a music executive to his more recent transition into media commentary, Baloyi has made headlines for his bold statements, frequent disputes, and public feuds.
Whether he’s calling out politicians, fellow artists, or former collaborators, Nota Baloyi rarely holds back. While some admire his candidness, others accuse him of clout-chasing or stirring drama for attention.
Still, this latest claim involving Sol Phenduka adds another layer to Nota’s complex public persona. It also puts a spotlight on how personal grievances can spill into the public domain, especially when both parties involved have sizable online followings.
At this point, it’s unclear whether Nota Baloyi intends to take legal action against Sol Phenduka or simply wanted to air his grievances publicly. Given the amount involved—R15,000—and the seriousness of the accusation, some legal experts suggest that Baloyi could pursue a civil claim if he can prove that services were paid for and not rendered.
However, the lack of a formal written contract (as far as is known) could make it difficult to enforce such a claim in court. As the story continues to unfold, fans and industry insiders alike are watching closely to see whether Sol Phenduka will address the issue or let the controversy pass.
