New commemorative coins launched

South Africa has six new coins, which will be released over the next few months. The coins were launched by the Reserve Bank in partnership with South African Mint, to commemorate 25 years of democracy. There are five new R2 coins and a new R5 coin.

It’s also the first time the public’s been able to give input on the themes of the currency.

“We’ve got our own artists at the mint. The idea was to have something truly South African to reflect the diversity of South Africans. It wasn’t just about choosing a specific artist, it was about getting a diversity of artists that represents the diversity of our country,” said Managing Director of the SA Mint, Tumi Tsehlo.
