Nasaret community wants answers over reconstruction of near-perfect roads

The community is crying foul and believes that “corruption” may be behind the municipality’s sudden desire to fix main routes in Nasaret, like Drosdy Street, which was resealed less than two years ago.

Apart from ripping up “streets that didn’t even have a single pothole”, contractors are also working at their leisure, and abandoning the construction sites without adhering to legalities like providing hard barriers around the roads, barricade netting and road safety and caution signs, which are both visible during the day and night.

DA councillor Morgan Bruiners says the party is seeking answers as to why the road construction contracts were granted, and to who.

He says the administration is quick to cry “legal consequences” on matters which suit the authority but cannot even ensure quality control or oversight on the project.

“We’re sitting with a huge mess. The municipality needs to take responsibility,” Cllr Bruiners says.

He says there’s nothing left of the once “perfect” roads, and the community was left reeling after the recent heavy rains, leaving deep muddy puddles that vehicles cannot drive over.

“It’s clear that there is a snake in the grass when the municipality fails to provide tarred roads for mushrooming townships like Extension 24, and rebuilding roads which don’t have a single fault. Not even a pothole could be found.”

The municipality has not responded to questions.
