More than 100 motorists owe City of Cape Town millions in traffic fines

The City of Cape Town says that over 100 motorists with outstanding warrants owe the city millions of rands in unpaid traffic fines.

This after the metro nabbed two taxi drivers on Tuesday for unpaid traffic fines of at least R100,000 each.

The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) said while it doesn’t condone traffic violations, there are no lanes dedicated to minibus taxis to move freely during peak hours.

SANTACO provincial spokesperson, Makhosandile Tumana: “The people who are in the car, the commuters, are also putting more pressure on them, they have to go back again and take more people at the rank. It is very unfortunate, it’s not a pressure that comes from the owners or for the target, that’s not like that.”
