Mossel Bay man arrested for allegedly defrauding R3 million from 19 people

A 58-year-old man from Mossel Bay has been arrested for allegedly defrauding potential home buyers of more than R3 million for houses that were never built.

Police said that between 2014 and 2018, the man, acting as a housing developer, advertised a piece of land on social media earmarked for a housing development in Mossel Bay.

The man allegedly swindled R3 million from 19 unsuspecting victims for homes that never materialized and disappeared.

Southern Cape police spokesperson, Christopher Spies, said that the man was finally nabbed at his office on Monday and appeared in court on Tuesday.

“The accused made his first court appearance on 18 counts of fraud and he was remanded in custody. The case was postponed to 6 August 2024 for a formal bail application.”
