No ANC leader has been or will be captured by monopoly capital, that’s according to former president Thabo Mbeki.
Mbeki’s comments come amid debate around the funding of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s ANC presidential campaign.
During an address at Unisa this week, the former statesman also spoke about how the army might have stepped in, when he was recalled as president.
Mbeki believes the governing party can’t confine the questions surrounding the CR17 campaign just to President Cyril Ramaphosa.
He says there’s a bigger problem around money within the ANC.
“It’s an issue that has been with the ANC for sometime. So I am sure that the ANC will deal with that issue. I am saying the ANC has identified as a problem, the use of money because clearly it’s got to be addressed, and with statements that are being made now that there hasn’t been any policy and therefore the matter must be attended too,” Mbeki said.
Some in the ANC and broader society are questioning Ramaphosa’s proximity to capitalists and what’s been termed, the ‘Stellenbosch Mafia’ but Mbeki doesn’t believe any ANC leader has been bought by monopoly capital.
“I am quite certain that as members of the ANC, we would never allow a situation in which leaders of the ANC are bought by monopoly capital, that they cease to be our leaders and they become property of somebody else. If that happens you should blame the rest of us but I don’t think we would allow that to happen.”
Mbeki had addressed the process that saw him being recalled as president, after suffering a crushing defeat to Jacob Zuma in Polokwane.
“In 2008 the National Executive Committee of the ANC, decided that that I should leave government as president, so I knew that this was coming, so I talked to the president of the ANC and I said to him. I know you people you going to this meeting and I know this is one of the things you going to discuss and this going to be the outcome and I said to him am pretty that’s going to happen but I want to tell you that if you say I will leave.”
Mbeki has dropped a bombshell, saying the army was on standby to defend him, if he had resisted the ANC’s call for him to go.
“I knew that you people were already on standby to say that this is our commander-in-chief and he is not going which would create an enormous crisis, so we couldn’t do it.”
The unusually candid former president says today many leaders are wearing ANC t-shirts, while not embodying the party’s ethos.

Popular sports broadcaster Robert Marawa has suffered a third heart attack that saw him placed in ICU last week, he has revealed. In a video that he posted to his 866 000 Twitter followers on Saturday, Marawa confirmed that he drove himself to the hospital last week after “not feeling well” and that he was in ICU a couple of hours later.
