The African National Congress (ANC) admitted that the Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) Party contributed to its electoral decline.
The MK Party, backed by former ANC president Jacob Zuma, dislodged the ANC from the number one spot in KwaZulu-Natal and established itself as the third most supported political organization in the country.
The ANC’s National Executive Committee has been meeting at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg to dissect the reasons behind its “disappointing” electoral performance.
The ANC said that the MK Party is a project that was formed to manipulate its voters.
It said that Zuma is lying when he says he formed the MK party to fight the ANC from the outside.
ANC’s first deputy Secretary General Nomvula Mokonyane said that the MK Party also stole support bases of other parties.
“What was the message that made people from Denver Hostel to shift their votes from the party they historically voted for (IFP), which is not the ANC and vote for the MK Party. Those are the things we need to look at. Is regionalism a reality? Is tribalism a factor? Is the issue of culture also creeping into the political dynamics of this country.”
Mokonyane said that the ANC is also looking into the rise of other political parties like the National Coloured Congress, Al Jama-Ah and the Patriotic Alliance among others.
