First Pitch Black Afro and now Phuzekhemisi. What is going on with South African male artists?
According to the SowetanLIVE, maskandi legend Phuzekhemisi, real name Zibokwakhe Johnston Mnyandu, will be appearing in court on the 15th of February on charges of murder. In early December last year, Phuzekhemisi shot one of his band members multiple times after the two got into a heated argument. The band member later died in hospital.
Maskandi is a genre of music that can be described as a type of Zulu folk or troubadour music. The popular genre boasts musical icons such as Inkunzi Emdaka, Osolwazi and Imithente, among several others.
Known for his controversial lyrics, ‘Phuza’ as he is affectionately known, has produced numerous albums including Impimpi, Ngo ’49 and Inkunzi Kabhejane.
Phuza is now the second male South African musician to be charged with murder this year. Rapper Pitch Black Afro, real name Thulani Ngcobo, was charged for the murder of his wife and is currently being held in police custody pending his trial.
South Africans are asking themselves the exact same question on Twitter.
