Joburg Human Settlements denies responsibility in Marshalltown fire

Joburg Human Settlements is refusing to accept blame for the Usindiso Building fire.

This is despite an inquiry finding the Department was responsible for the tragedy that left 77 people dead last year.

The department says it was not responsible for the building and was not given an opportunity to give input.

But the Socio-Economic Rights Institute says the City of Joburg should not hide from its responsibility in the Usindiso building fire.

The Khampepe Inquiry into the tragedy found that Joburg city departments and agencies are to blame.

SERI Executive Director Nomzamo Zondo says the city cannot dodge its responsibility.
