Hundreds of foreign nationals are currently being housed for safety after coming under attack in South Africa in recent weeks, according to Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula.
The Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster Ministers held a media briefing on Tuesday regarding the recent incidents of violence in different parts of the country.
“South Africa is not a xenophobic nation. Whoever is found on the wrong side of the law should be dealt with. Hundreds of foreign nationals took refuge at police stations after coming under attack, 755 such persons are currently housed for safety”, said Mapisa-Nqakula.
Meanwhile, the cluster says 10 of the 12 people killed during the recent outbreak of violence in the country were South Africans.
“Two people died on Sunday, bringing the total number of deaths to 12, 10 of which were South Africans and 2 are foreign nationals.
Law enforcement will ensure that the authority of the state is not undermined. Any attempt to undermine the authority of the state will be met with severe consequences”, added Mapisa-Nqakula.
