Manchester United have sacked head coach Ruben Amorim, ending his turbulent 14-month spell at Old Trafford with immediate effect.
The 40-year-old departs after overseeing one of the most chaotic periods in the club’s modern history, both on and off the pitch. Ruben Amorim managed just 24 wins from 63 matches, giving him a 38.71% win rate — the worst of any United manager since Frank O’Farrell, who was dismissed in 1971.
According to The Athletic, Amorim was informed of the decision and left the club immediately. Former United midfielder Darren Fletcher is expected to take over on an interim basis.
Amorim’s position had come under intense scrutiny following an explosive post-match press conference, where he insisted on being referred to as “manager” rather than “head coach” and appeared to criticise director of football Jason Wilcox over failed transfer business, including a move for Bournemouth winger Antoine Semenyo.
Despite publicly insisting he would not resign, Amorim demanded greater control behind the scenes. However, United’s hierarchy ultimately took the decision out of his hands.
On the pitch, results failed to improve consistently. United finished 15th in the Premier League last season and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur. Defensive frailties persisted, with the club enduring a record 15 consecutive away games without a clean sheet.
Amorim was also criticised for his rigid commitment to a 3-4-3 formation, later admitting it would only work with significant investment. His outspoken press conferences, including comments about “hating” his players, further fuelled unrest during his tenure.
