Mamelodi Sundowns showed their class at the Lucas Moripe Stadium after thrashing eight-time CAF Champions League winners Al Ahly 5-0 in the first leg of their quarter-final.
Gaston Sirino returned to the Sundowns line-up after missing the goalless draw with Orlando Pirates on Monday, with Emiliano Tade dropping to the bench.
Sirino’s influence was visible for all to see as he played the pass to set Tebogo Langerman free down left and the full-back managed to pick out Themba Zwane, who slotted home on 14 minutes.
The lead was double just under 10 minutes later when Sirino’s free-kick found its way to Wayne Arendse, who did well to side-foot the ball home from close range.
Al Ahly were struggling to carve out any chances at the Sundowns goal, which prompted coach Martín Lasarte to withdraw Mohamed Hany for Nasser Maher for the final 10 minutes of the half.
The visitors did manage to create an opening late in the first stanza, but goalkeeper Denis Onyango proved his worth with a fine save.
The second half got off to a lively start for the hosts, who were awarded a penalty in the opening minute, which Ricardo Nascimento converted to extend the lead.
Pitso Mosimane’s men went from strength to strength in the second half and they were rewarded with a fourth goal on the hour mark as Sirino rifled the ball beyond Mohamed-Shenawy after being picked out by Langerman.
One of the biggest cheers of the day was reserved for Sibusiso Vilakazi, who returned to action after replacing Sirino for the final 20 minutes.
Phakamani Mahlambi was introduced a few minutes later in place of Maboe, and he managed to rub salt in the wounds of his former side by turning home from six-yards out to round off the scoring for Sundowns.
