Fraud-accused Malusi Booi and co-accused to spend weekend in jail

Former Cape Town Human Settlements Mayoral Committee member Malusi Booi and nine of his co-accused will spend the weekend behind bars after bail judgment in their case has been reserved to next Tuesday.

The group made their second appearance at the Cape Town Magistrates Court on Friday.

They are accused of being involved in alleged tender fraud worth over R1 billion within the municipality’s Human Settlements Directorate.

Prosecutors believe the alleged fraud was orchestrated by alleged 28’s gang boss, Ralph Stanfield, and his wife, Nicole Johnson.

Lawyers for the accused spent hours trying to convince Magistrate Alida Theart to release their clients on bail.

They argued that the accused had cooperated with all the State’s requests and that the State had a weak case against them.

The State is not opposing bail but has asked the court to set bail between R20,000 and R200,000.

However, the magistrate asked to be given time to consider all the submissions made in the bail application before making her judgment.
