Mall attacks an eye-opener for security cluster: Defence Minister

The police must work closer with private security companies to determine threats to shopping centres. The Defence Minister has conceded to Parliament an opportunity was missed to gather intelligence from them before attacks on malls in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng.

Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula says she views the rampant looting at malls as counter-revolutionary.

“I can only say this was an eye-opener for those in the security cluster. This was a learning curve, and we were nearly caught with our…. I don’t want to say pants down, but that’s a reality,” she said.

We must stop what is happening because our view is that this is clearly undermining of a democratic state. What we see here is seeds of counter-revolutionary, undermining of the state, and the state must assert its authority.

Mapisa-Nqakula briefed Parliament’s Defence Committee on the plan to increase the number of troops deployed to quell the violence. She said she had “submitted a request for deployment of plus-minus 25,000” soldiers. Troop deployments are authorised by the president.
