Legendary Bafana player Phil Masinga has died

Legendary Bafana player Phil Masinga has died. South Africans are mourning the death of Bafana Bafana star Phil Masinga, who passed away after a long illness. Tributes have started pouring in for one of the star players who famously won Afcon in 1996.

He is most celebrated for scoring the crucial goal to send South Africa to the 1998 Fifa World Cup in France. He was just 49 years old. In December he was admitted to the Tshepong Hospital in Klerksdorp with an “undisclosed illness”.

City Press reported that there were efforts to get him to a private hospital for better medical care. He earned more than 50 caps for South Africa but reports suggested that he was in financial need later in life.
