Legendary actor Jerry Mofokeng to be given a doctorate. The veteran actor who has been in the arts industry for more than 20 years said that he is honoured to be recognised by such a reputable university.

Jerry Mofokeng wa Makhetha will soon change his title from Mr to Doctor as he is going to be honoured with a doctorate by the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Free State in June this year.

“Because it’s a reputable university, I know it’s not a favour, it is something well deserved,” said the 62-year-old. “I feel affirmed. I feel honoured and I feel recognised, ”he added.

The E-TV Scandal actor follows the footsteps of other artists like Letta Mbuli, Caiphus Semenya and John Kani amongst others who have also been honoured by local universities with doctorate degrees.

Dr John Kani who is also a friend to Mofokeng Makhetha congratulated him and said that the veteran actor deserves the doctorate degree as he has contributed a lot in the filming industry in South Africa and beyond.

Known for his controversial character of Neo Mokheti or Bra Moscowin on E-TV Scandal!, Jerry has managed to draw so much attention from the fans of the SA Film and Television Awards (SAFTA ) nominated soapie.

He has appeared in several big and small screen productions that include Soul City, Yizo Yizo, Isidingo, Tsotsi, Lobola, Four Corners and many more. He also has appeared in many stage plays.

Not only does Makhetha inspire many young people who are in the art industry to pursue their dreams but he has managed to motivate his own son Lerato Makhetha who is now an actor on Isidingo.

Jerry who was described by his son as a loving father on Top Gear last year opened up on Kaya FM in an interview with Bridget Masinga that he found out about his real father at the age of 58. Mofokeng was born in 1956 and he attended school at Orlando West High School and Youth Alive Ministries in Soweto in the 70s.

Jerry Mofokeng graduated from Wits University with an undergraduate degree majoring in acting in 1987. He then pursued a Masters degree in Theater Directing at Columbia University in the United States.

In 2013, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award for Acting at the seventh annual SA Film and Television Awards (SAFTAs)

Jerry Mofokeng who turns 63 years this year and is a father of five children with his wife of 39 years Claudine Mofokeng.
