KZN Transport Dept calls for order after taxi blockades

The Transport Department in KwaZulu-Natal has called on taxi owners to restore their organization following taxi blockades Tuesday morning.

On Tuesday morning taxi operators blockaded parts of Mpangeni and Ulundi, in northern KZN.

The blockade was as a result of taxi conflicts over routes, and the other was over the issue of permits.

Transport MEC Siboniso Duma said that the law must apply to all.

“There are problems with permits in the province of KwaZulu-Natal, and we do talk to taxi associations, and we are not going to compromise when it comes to the issue and the implementation of the law.”

Duma added that the department was willing to meet up with all stakeholders involved for a solution.

“Even at night we must talk, we are willing but blocking the road is not the solution and will not assist the development of KwaZulu-Natal. Yes, I am willing to talk to them and we’ve started engaging stakeholders in the department.”
