KwaZulu-Natal police have shot and killed two wanted suspects following a dramatic gun battle linked to a cash-in-transit robbery in Verulam, north of Durban.
The incident unfolded during an intelligence-driven operation, as officers tracked down suspects believed to be part of a heavily armed gang behind a recent heist.
Shootout Erupts During Police Operation
According to police, officers followed up on information that led them to a house in the Edendale area.
However, what was supposed to be an arrest quickly turned into a violent confrontation.
As police approached the property, the suspects allegedly opened fire — triggering a shootout. Officers returned fire, and two suspects were fatally wounded during the exchange.
A third suspect managed to escape and remains on the run.
Linked to Brazen Verulam Heist
The suspects were believed to be connected to a cash-in-transit robbery that took place just hours earlier in Verulam.
During that incident:
- A group of around 10 to 12 armed suspects ambushed a cash vehicle
- Explosives were used to blow open the armoured truck
- Security guards were disarmed and robbed of their firearms
- An undisclosed amount of cash was taken
The attack caused panic in the area, with explosions and gunfire reported by residents.
Weapons and Vehicles Recovered
After the shootout, police recovered:
- Two rifles and a handgun
- Ammunition
- A vehicle believed to have been used in the robbery
- A second vehicle with multiple number plates
These findings suggest a well-planned operation, possibly involving a larger criminal network. (Joburg ETC)
No Injuries Among Police
Despite the intensity of the gun battle, police confirmed that no officers were injured during the operation.
This comes as officers continue to face dangerous conditions while tackling organised crime in the province.
Manhunt Continues for Remaining Suspects
Authorities have confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing.
The suspect who escaped is believed to be linked to the same gang, and police are actively searching for him.
More arrests could follow as the operation expands.
A Pattern of Violent Crime in KZN
Cash-in-transit robberies remain a major concern in KwaZulu-Natal.
These crimes are often:
- Highly coordinated
- Carried out by heavily armed groups
- Involving explosives and multiple vehicles
Because of this, police operations frequently turn into high-risk confrontations.
What Happens Next
Investigators are now working to:
- Identify the full network behind the robbery
- Track down remaining suspects
- Recover stolen money
The case is expected to develop further in the coming days.
The Bigger Picture
This latest shootout highlights the ongoing battle between law enforcement and organised crime.
While the deaths of the suspects mark progress in the case, the escape of another suspect shows the operation is far from over.
For residents in KZN, it’s another reminder of how quickly violence can erupt — and how high the stakes remain.
