KZN Beach Clean-Up will host their first clean-up for 2020 on Saturday morning at Battery Beach Road in Durban.
With the summer rains around the corner, and the festive season behind us, Durban environmental groups are wasting no time and are already planning to tackle the scourge of plastic along Durban’s beaches, reports Northglen News.
Once such an organisation is KZN Beach Clean Up, which will host their first clean-up for 2020 on Saturday morning at Battery Beach Road in Durban.
The event was shared on their Facebook page.
“Meet us on the beach in front of Pirates Lifesaving Club. As part of our efforts to reduce single-use waste, please bring reusable gloves,” read the post.
Durban North resident, Lindsay Hopkins from Waste Action Tribe said they would be attending the clean-up.
She also highlighted the importance of using reusable bags to collect litter to avoid adding to the problem with the excessive use of plastic litter bags.
Cameron Service of The Litterboom Project said clean-up efforts would be necessary going forward in 2020.
“The summer rains still lie ahead, so people should get into a habit of taking a bag down when they are on their local beaches and consistently do their bit in 2020,” he said.
The eThekwini Municipality said an additional 200 temporary litter-pickers were employed by the city and officials from Durban Solid Waste worked 24 hours a day during the festive period.
